The smell of fried eggs greeted us when we stepped into the lodge. Lucky for us, eggs were easily cooked over a fire, and it was getting chilly anyway, so the working fireplace was more than welcomed. How we planned on keeping it burning was an issue. We hadn't gone out of our way to collect firewood, considering we’d been relying on electric heating and cooking.

Living at the lodge had made us all soft. Of course, life had decided to remind us that we were still in the bugpocalypse.

“Eggs?” Aaron asked from the fireplace.

“Yes, please. But I’m going to go say hi to Henrietta first.”

Bre’k and I headed out to the chicken run, where Henrietta came out to greet me. She glanced at Bre’k for a moment, judging him before deciding he was okay.

She tried to follow us back into the house, but I didn’t let her. They'd reopened the corridor into the caves, and I didn't want her getting curious and ending up lost in there. Morgan had taken Reese's Pieces out with her for the very same reason.

“Sorry, you'll have to stay here today.” I gave her another hug and closed the door.

Aaron waited for us at the dining room table with two plates of fried eggs and some of that yeasty bread the survivors had now that they had a good yeast going from their fermentation processes. We even had a side of morning potatoes. All we were missing was the bacon.

“The other hunters helped me remove the barriers into the caves before they left,” Aaron said. “I have to admit I don't particularly like staring down that dark corridor.”

I hadn't been here when the scourge had come through that very tunnel and attacked the people living here. That was before my time, but signs of it were all over the home. There were still visible scratch marks all over the walls, though someone had tried to paint over them. But, like putting makeup on a pig, it hadn’t helped and had only made the deep scratches more visible.

Breakfast done, we rinsed our plates in the sink. There were already two basins set up, one with dish soap and the other with plain water. This was how we’d done it back in the caves when I'd lived with the survivors. It didn't get the dishes fully cleaned, especially the last few dishes, but it did the job.

We headed toward the back corridor, robots in hand; they weren't quite drones because they didn't fly. This place was extra creepy now that I knew the barriers to the internal cave system were gone. It felt as if a giant bug would lunge through the darkness at any time.

I stared into the darkened corridor and shuddered. Bre’k’s arms tightened around me, and I drew some bravery from them. I could do this. It wasn't like I was going in myself; I had this brave little robot to be my eyes and ears.

The robot was kind of cute, and someone had painted a face on it.
